NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS

vs. DUKE BLUE DEVILS

Cameron Indoor Stadium, Durham, NC

UNC and Duke each get a big chance to pad their resumes before the ACC Tournament.

College basketball's favorite rivalry is back on Saturday and, if all goes according to plan for the two teams involved, it could be back again the very next week. That's because after Duke and North Carolina wrap up their regular seasons this weekend with a tilt at Cameron Indoor, they'll head to Brooklyn for the ACC Tournament, which could pit the two teams against each other once more. (And, who knows, they could meet for a fourth time once the Big Dance comes around later this month.) The first go-round this year took place on February 8 in Chapel Hill, when one-point favorite UNC took down the visiting Blue Devils by an 82-78 score. That loss was the third in four games for Duke, which ripped off a five-game winning streak in its immediate aftermath before losing 64-63 at Virginia Tech on Monday night. UNC won four straight after beating Duke to extend their winning streak to six, but also lost their most recent game in nail-biting fashion, falling 91-88 at home against Miami on Tuesday.

It's an interesting group that Roy Williams is coaching this year, one without the big-name stars that often stand out in his lineups. But it's a team that has come a long way since a baffling home loss to Wofford earlier in the year, and may actually be in line for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament depending what in can do in Durham and Brooklyn over the next week. Some of the classic Williams archetypes are still here, though. There's the senior leader at point guard, in this case Joel Berry III. Despite 1-of-8 shooting from deep the last time these two teams met, Berry led all scorers with 21 points (on five more shots than anyone else). He torched Miami on Tuesday with 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting, although it wasn’t quite enough to get the win. Despite being the point guard, Berry is not the team's leader in assists—that would be F Theo Pinson. Pinson is truly an enigma, and a constant source of frustration for Carolina fans, but he had 11 assists against Miami and 23 points against Syracuse the game before that. He's certainly an x-factor for this team. Another classic Williams player is the scrappy power forward, which this year is PF Luke Maye. If you only pay attention to college hoops come March, you'll remember Maye from his Elite Eight heroics last year. This season, he's turned into one of the conference's best players with averages of 17.9 PPG and 10.2 RPG. He had 15 and 8 against Duke last month, an impressive showing against their enormous front line. Gs Kenny Williams and Cameron Johnson round out the starting five with a combined average around 24 PPG, but they combined for 38 against Duke in the first matchup. Another such performance from those two would be ideal.

You probably know a lot of names on this Duke team, as every player seems to be either a lottery pick or a widely detested Bobby Hurley/Christian Laettner/J.J. Redick type who has a history of trying to injure opponents and crying about it afterwards. In the latter category is G Grayson Allen, who has actually chilled out and avoided the negative headlines this season. He's stepped up particularly well as of late, scoring at least 19 points in five of his last six games. The game immediately prior to that stretch was UNC, against whom he managed only nine. The list of NBA talents starts with C Marvin Bagley III, a lengthy behemoth who is unreasonably coordinated for his size. Paradoxically, his singular talent makes him kind of an uneven fit with this team, but obviously Coach K will always prefer to have him on the floor. He has played two games since missing four with an injury, and has been relatively quiet in those games (but deadly efficient on 13-of-18 shooting). He had 15 points and 16 boards against UNC last month. He's joined in the post by C Wendell Carter Jr., one of the most underrated players in the country due to the fact that he plays next to Bagley. Carter's talents are slightly more conventional for the position—though he's also very skilled—but he's just as much of a force. Freshmen Gs Gary Trent Jr. and Trevon Duval start alongside Allen in the backcourt. Trent is one of the ACC's best marksmen from three, while Duval leads the Devils in assists. Big man Marques Bolden and annoying freshman G Alex O'Connell are the most significant bench contributors.
