CHICAGO BULLS (24-25)

at OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (28-21)

Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:30 p.m. ET
Line: Oklahoma City -3.5, Total: 206.5

Chicago kicks off a West Coast trip with a visit to Oklahoma City.

The Bulls salvaged a 1-2 record in a three-game homestand on Sunday night, scoring a season-high points total (for regulation games) in a 121-108 victory over the 76ers (CHI -7). The win came on the heels of losses to Atlanta and Miami, and improved Chicago’s record to 24-25 (23-26 ATS), good for seventh in the Eastern Conference—and a two-game lead on the ninth-place Bucks. Now, after a couple days off, the Bulls will open a six-game Western Conference road trip on Wednesday night in Oklahoma City. It’s the second leg of a back-to-back for the Thunder, who lost 108-94 in San Antonio on Tuesday (SAS -9). Having gone 5-5 in their last 10 games, the Thunder are 28-21 (26-22-1 ATS) and are seventh in the West, but within reasonable striking distance of the No. 4 seed and holding a six-game cushion between them and the eighth-place Nuggets. Since 1996, road underdogs of 3.5 to 9.5 points coming off a home win of at least 10 points are 61-111 ATS when revenging a home loss of 10 points or more. (Oklahoma City beat the Bulls 109-94 in Chicago on Jan. 9). In the same timeframe, games involving two teams that are shooting worse than 33% from three-point range at least 42 games into the season are 334-210 Over against the total. PF Taj Gibson is probable to play for the Bulls on Wednesday night, while self-injured C Enes Kanter is going to be out a while for Oklahoma City.

Scoring 107 points per 100 possessions, the Bulls offense ranks 19th in the NBA in offensive efficiency rating. They’re strong defensively, ranking 10th with a defensive efficiency rating of 107.1 points allowed per 100 possessions. They play at something of a plodding pace, the eighth-slowest in the league at 94.7 possessions per 48 minutes. While SF Jimmy Butler (24.5 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 4.7 APG, 1.8 SPG) has been in the eye of a media firestorm involving pretty much the entire team, the superstar’s production has not been affected—for the most part. A three-point performance (in 33 minutes, on one-of-13 shooting) against Miami is a huge eyesore in his game log, but he had 40 in the game before that and had 28, eight rebounds and seven assists in the win over Philadelphia. His fellow headliner, SG Dwyane Wade (18.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.6 SPG) had a strong month of January, but hasn’t topped 15 points in either of his last two outings, and had four turnovers in each of them. Despite playing second fiddle to Butler, he has actually attempted slightly more shots per game (16.5) than he did on the Heat last season. PG Rajon Rondo (6.7 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 6.6 APG, 1.3 SPG) could be traded at any moment, but he appears to have retaken some of his minutes as the team’s point guard. Second-year PG Jerian Grant (5.2 PPG, 1.5 APG) has been starting as of late. PF Bobby Portis (4.2 PPG, 3.5 RPG) takes on an increased role when Gibson is out (11.6 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 1.0 BPG), although both should be playing on Wednesday. C Robin Lopez (9.4 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1.7 BPG) protects the rim.

The Thunder offense is almost identically as productive as the Bulls’, scoring 107.1 points per 100 possessions. Their defense, which allows 106.6 points per 100 possessions, is the sixth best in the NBA. At 97.9 possessions per 48 minutes, they play at the NBA’s seventh-fastest pace. A rundown of the roster could pretty much begin and end with PG Russell Westbrook (30.7 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 10.3 APG, 1.6 SPG). The fiery guard’s revenge tour has somehow far surpassed its lofty expectations, as Russ leads the league in scoring, is second in assists and, perhaps most impressively, 12th in rebounding (first among non-PF/Cs). You may have heard a thing or two about his 24 triple-doubles—he’s literally averaging one—and the fact that his usage rate of 42.3 will set a league record if it survives the season. He also leads the league with a 29.09 player efficiency rating. (Kevin Durant, his nemesis, is second). Kanter (14.4 PPG, 6.7 RPG) is third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding despite playing just over 21 minutes per game, so his absence will put a serious amount of pressure on the rest of the team’s bench unit to step up its scoring load. SG Victor Oladipo (16.2 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.2 SPG) has worked out quite well as Westbrook’s sidekick, especially considering his ability to contribute on both ends of the court. C Steven Adams (12.2 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.1 BPG) missed two games with a concussion in mid-January, and he has averaged 13.4 PPG, 9.2 RPG and 2.0 BPG in the five games since he returned. SF Andre Roberson (6.4 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 1.0 BPG) and rookie PF Domantas Sabonis (6.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG) start alongside him in the frontcourt. SF Jerami Grant (5.8 PPG, 1.1 BPG) plays 20+ minutes per game off the bench.
