NEW YORK KNICKS (21-28)

at WASHINGTON WIZARDS (27-20)

Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. ET
Line: Washington -7.5, Total: 217

Have the Knicks physically recovered from Sunday’s 4OT marathon?

The Knicks played their longest game as a franchise since 1951 on Sunday, losing 142-139 to the Hawks in Atlanta in a quadruple-overtime thriller (NYK +6). The Knicks are 21-28 in the wake of the defeat (28-21 ATS), and 2.5 games out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The tight loss to Atlanta was the latest in a long line of demoralizing defeats for New York, as it was their sixth final-possession loss in the month of January alone. They’ll try to overcome the residual fatigue of Sunday’s marathon contest when they travel to Washington to take on the Wizards. Washington continued its red-hot January on Sunday, winning 107-94 at New Orleans (PK) in their fourth straight victory. The Wizards are fifth in the Eastern Conference at 27-20 (28-19 ATS), and they have the second best record in the league in the month of January at 11-4. Over the last five seasons, underdogs scoring at least 99 points per game (NYK) are 35-80 ATS against opponents that have led their last two games by at least 10 points at halftime. Since 1996, games involving road teams coming off a loss of three points or fewer (NYK) against an opponent that has scored at least 100 points in four straight games are 72-33 Over against the total. PG Derrick Rose is expected to miss Tuesday’s game for the Knicks.

The Knicks rank in the middle of the league with an offensive efficiency rating of 108.2 points scored per 100 possessions (16th). They’re not so strong on defense, coming in 24th in allowing 110.9 points per 100 possessions. They play the 15th-fastest pace in the NBA at 96.7 possessions per 48 minutes. Since most consider the team to be out of the playoff chase, attention surrounding the organization in recent weeks has been focused almost entirely on the fate of star SF Carmelo Anthony (23.1 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 3.0 APG). At 32 years old, Melo doesn’t seem to fit into the rebuilding project that is necessary to make New York a contender again. But he has a no-trade clause, and his diminished skills limit his appeal to other franchises, so he has proved difficult to trade for an eager Phil Jackson. Anthony was miserable at home against Charlotte last Friday night, scoring 18 points on 8-of 26 shooting. He redeemed himself in Atlanta, though, scoring 45 points in his best game all season. Regardless, Knicks fans are much more enamored with PF Kristaps Porzingis (18.6 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 2.0 BPG), who has taken clear steps forward in his second season. His shooting percentage is up to 45.2% from 42.1% last year, and he plays five more minutes per game. He has improved his three-point shooting, as well, at 38.1% this season (33.3% last year). With Rose (17.9 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 4.4 APG) sitting out, playmaking duties will fall on PG Brandon Jennings (8.3 PPG, 4.8 APG) and, to a lesser extent, SGs Courtney Lee (10.3 PPG, 2.0 APG) and Justin Holiday (7.5 PPG). Cs Joakim Noah (5.2 PPG, 9.0 RPG), Kyle O’Quinn (6.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1.3 BPG) and Willy Hernangomez (5.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG) will all get minutes at the five spot.

The Wizards offense slots in the top third of the league, scoring 109.6 per 100 possessions (9th). The defense is 15th, allowing 107.9 points per 100 possessions. They’re tied for 15th in pace with the Knicks, averaging 96.7 possessions per game. That number would certainly be lower if not for the ball-pushing ways of PG John Wall (22.9 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 10.3 APG, 2.2 SPG). Named to his fourth consecutive All-Star appearance last week, Wall has been arguably the best point guard in the Eastern Conference this season. He is fourth among them in scoring, first in assists, first in steals and third in rebounding. (He is second in the entire league in both assists and steals.) He had a season-high 19 assists in the win over New Orleans. SG Bradley Beal (21.8 PPG, 3.6 APG, 1.0 SPG) has finally fulfilled the role of Robin to Wall’s Batman, so far this season staving off the injuries that have plagued him much of his career. He makes 2.7 three-pointers per game, 11th-most in the league. He had 27 points against New Orleans and 31 (on 12-of-18 shooting) in a high-stakes win over Boston early last week. SF Otto Porter Jr. (14.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.5 SPG) continues to make strides, too, as he is 12th in the league in shooting percentage (2nd among non-PF/Cs). PF Markieff Morris (14.1 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG) and C Marcin Gortat (11.5 PPG, 11.4 RPG, 1.0 BPG) headline a well-rounded frontcourt: Morris can stretch the floor with jumpers while Gortat is ninth in the league in rebounding. SF Kelly Oubre Jr. (6.3 PPG) has only six total points in 54 combined minutes in the Wizards’ last two games.
