FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets cornerback Dimitri Patterson says the team's often-criticized defensive backs have a chance to ''shut people up'' this season.

Patterson, working his way back from three leg ailments, says critics can say what they want about the Jets' banged-up secondary. It's up to the players, he says Tuesday, to prove them wrong.

Second-year cornerback Dee Milliner is recovering from a high ankle sprain, and it's uncertain when he'll return. Milliner was expected to team with Patterson as the Jets' starters at cornerback, but neither has been healthy this summer.

Rex Ryan has even had to convert safety Antonio Allen to cornerback, a position he started at for the first time in New York's preseason game at Cincinnati last weekend.
