The Dodgers and Giants opened their respective seasons with a four-game series against one another, and what an odd series it was. The Giants took the first two games of the series on the road by 1-0 scores, thanks to five shutout innings from Ty Blach in the opener and seven shutout innings from Johnny Cueto in the follow-up, and a total of six shutout innings from the bullpen.

But it was the Dodgers' turn to quiet their opponents' bats in the latter half of the series, winning 5-0 and 9-0 in the third and fourth games, respectively. Their bats woke up in a big way, and they finished the series with a cumulative scoring advantage of 14-2 as a result. LA then went on to be swept in Arizona (8-7 (15), 6-1, 3-0), and they enter their weekend rematch with the Giants having scored one run or fewer in more than half of their games thus far this season. San Francisco played two games against Seattle, losing 6-4 on Tuesday before winning 10-1 on Wednesday.

On Friday night it's Maeda for the Dodgers versus Holland for the Giants. Maeda was brilliant in his first start of the season, fanning 10 Giants across five scoreless innings. On Saturday it's Rich Hill against Chris Stratton, and Hill also has an ERA of 0.00 after going six innings against San Fran without surrendering a run. Kershaw versus Blach in the Sunday game is a rematch of the opener, in which Blach actually outdueled the three-time Cy Young winner. But Kershaw enters this contest with a 2.25 ERA, while Blach is at 5.79 after getting shelled for six runs in 4.1 innings against the DBacks on Tuesday. C Yasmani Grandal (.435 OBP, 3 RBI) has been the lone standout batter for the Dodgers to this point. For the Giants it's 2B Joe Panik, who has shown surprising power with three homers.
