CHICAGO BULLS (42-41)

at BOSTON CELTICS (53-30)

Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Line: Boston -7.0, Total: 206

After a Game 1 loss to Chicago, the Celtics will be looking to rebound in Game 2—literally.

The 8 seed Chicago Bulls shocked the 1 seed Boston Celtics in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series, pulling away in the fourth quarter to grab a 106-102 victory in Boston (CHI +6.5). The game was tied at 74 entering the fourth, but the Bulls seemed to pull away in taking a 101-92 lead with 1:17 remaining, sending Celtics fans to the exits. Boston made enough shots and forced enough turnovers to cut the lead to two with seven seconds remaining, but Bulls forward Jimmy Butler dribbled out some clock and hit two free throws to ice the game at its final score. The real difference in the game was on the boards, where Chicago outrebounded Boston 65-44 and nearly grabbed as many offensive rebounds (20) as the Celtics had defensive rebounds (24). Since 1996, favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points that have been beaten by the spread by at least 48 total points in their last 10 games (BOS) are 74-36 ATS against opponents that have gone Under the total by at least 48 total points in their last seven games. Over the last five seasons, games involving teams with a winning percentage between .510 and .600 that have gone Under the total by at least 42 total points in their last five games (CHI) are 79-44 Under against totals of at least 200. Celtics PG Isaiah Thomas played in Game 1 despite mourning the death of his sister a day earlier, and it appears as if he will play in Game 2, as well.

For much of Game 1, it appeared as if Butler (23.9 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 5.5 APG, 1.9 SPG) was going to end the night having not made much of a difference. With 1:30 remaining in the third quarter, he only had scored 10 points. But he notched eight points to end the frame, including two three-point shots—not normally his specialty—and added 12 more in the fourth quarter to finish with 30 points and nine rebounds. He also was clutch defensively down the stretch, matching up with Isaiah Thomas at points to dare the Celtics to look for other offensive options (of which they have very few). After a slow start in Game 1, expect him to attack early on Tuesday in an attempt to set the tone for this Bulls offense. Veteran SG Dwyane Wade (18.3 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.4 SPG) was less impressive. After averaging 21.4 PPG in last year’s playoffs, he put up 11 on 12 shots in his 2017 postseason debut. He did add five rebounds and six assists, but a flubbed breakaway dunk made obvious how much athleticism he has lost at the age of 35. PF Bobby Portis (7.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG) has the biggest game of his career at a pretty convenient time, notching 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting (3-of-4 3PT) and nine rebounds. Along with C Robin Lopez (10.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.4 BPG), who had 14 points and 11 rebounds, he absolutely bullied the Celtics on the interior. PG Rajon Rondo (7.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 6.7 APG, 1.4 SPG) had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

It’s both in poor taste and wildly speculative to guess how Saturday’s tragedy is affecting Thomas’ play (28.9 PPG, 5.9 APG), which, at least in Game 1, was pretty consistent with how he has played all season. He finished with a strong statline of 33 points on 10-of-18 shooting, five rebounds, six assists and, in the one negative mark, a game-high six turnovers. It becomes especially clear just how essential Thomas is to this otherwise weak offense when he is on the bench, and it’s remarkable that he can post such efficient shooting numbers while really being the only real weapon on the floor. C Al Horford (14.0 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 5.0 APG, 1.2 BPG) did have a great offensive game in his first playoff appearance for Boston, scoring 19 points to go with seven rebounds and a game-high eight assists. He was brutally outmuscled by Lopez on rebounding attempts, though, and will need to box out better when looking to get defensive boards going forward. SG Avery Bradley (16.3 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.2 SPG) was the only other Celtic in double-figures with 14 points, and he also played excellent defense on Butler—even when he wasn’t able to actually stop him from scoring late in the game. SF Jae Crowder (13.9 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.0 SPG) had a quiet game with nine points and eight rebounds, while C Kelly Olynyk (9.0 PPG, 4.8 RPG) was loudly awful on both ends of the floor in his 23 minutes. Don’t be surprised if Brad Stevens gives some of those minutes to SF Jaylen Brown (6.6 PPG) going forward. PG Marcus Smart (10.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 4.6 APG, 1.6 SPG) played typically out-of-control basketball, although the 28.3% three-point shooter did manage to go 3-for-7 from deep.
