NEW YORK YANKEES (56-55)

at BOSTON RED SOX (60-50)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. ET
Line: New York +170, Boston -180, Total: 9.5

The Red Sox will be hoping to avoid a third consecutive loss when they host the Yankees on Tuesday.

New York was a seller at the deadline, but the team still has a slight chance to grab a Wild Card spot in the American League. The Yankees have now won three of their past five games coming into this one and will be hoping to keep it up against their rivals on Tuesday. The Red Sox, meanwhile, are really struggling lately and are beginning to fall behind in their quest to win the AL East. Boston needs to turn things around soon and the team has a good chance to do that against a Yankees lineup that is no longer potent at this point. The starters in this game are set to be RHP Luis Severino (1-6, 6.02 ERA, 37 K) for New York and RHP Rick Porcello (14-3, 3.46 ERA, 119 K) for Boston. One thing that stands out when looking into this game is that Boston is just 14-20 against the money line when it has a hot bullpen whose WHIP is under 1.25 over the past 15 games this season. The Sox are, however, 11-0 against the money line in home games with Porcello on the mound this season.

Luis Severino was one of the more exciting prospects the Yankees had heading into the season, but he really struggled to open the year and ended up being sent down to the minors. Now Severino has come back into the picture and he has pitched well in three bullpen appearances for the team, allowing just one earned run in his past 7.1 innings of work. Severino struck out 10 batters in those games and will be hoping to put in a quality start in this one. He has seemingly figured out his mechanics issues, but this matchup with the Sox won’t be easy. Offensively, some Yankees to watch out for in this game are OF Jacoby Ellsbury (.274, 4 HR, 34 RBI) and 3B Chase Headley (.251, 10 HR, 37 RBI). Both guys have been very good against the Red Sox pitcher in their careers, combining to go 17-for-44 with five homers and seven RBI. Ellsbury had four of those homers and he’ll be looking forward to this one on Tuesday. It doesn’t hurt that he has been extremely hot recently, raising his average from .266 to .274 over the past 10 contests.

Rick Porcello has been the most consistent pitcher in the rotation for Boston this season and he’ll be hoping to shut down the Yankees in this one. That should be very possible for the righty, as he has been excellent against New York this season. In two starts against the Yankees, Porcello has allowed just three earned runs in 14.0 innings of work. He has struck out 11 batters and walked just three in those games. He’ll be hoping to keep missing bats in this one and he should be able to avoid giving up homers, as he only allowed one when playing in Yankee Stadium and it’s much tougher to hit them in Fenway. Offensively, DH David Ortiz (.309, 25 HR, 87 RBI) is going to be extremely excited to get out there on Tuesday. Ortiz has dominated Severino in his career, going 3-for-5 with three homers and three RBI against the young righty. He’ll be hoping to go yard once again in this one.
