BOSTON RED SOX

at NEW YORK YANKEES

First pitch: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET

The Red Sox will be looking to end their stay in New York with a victory over the Yankees on Sunday night.

The Red Sox are currently trying to climb their way to the top of the AL East and a win over a mediocre Yankees team would certainly help them do so. New York, meanwhile, has been struggling all season and is barely alive in the AL wild card race. The Yankees need to either start winning soon or look into trading some of their more valuable assets. They do not benefit from missing out on the postseason and not picking up some younger prospects in the process. New York will, however, be motivated to win this game on Sunday. This is one of the biggest rivalries in sports and any win over the Red Sox would mean a lot to the Yankees. This matchup will feature some excellent pitching on Sunday, as LHP David Price (9-6, 4.34 ERA, 140 K) will be on the mound for Boston and RHP Masahiro Tanaka (6-2, 3.23 ERA, 93 K) will give it a go for New York. The status of 1B Mark Teixeira (Rest) is uncertain for this game. The Yankees will need to give him rest here and there for the remainder of the year and it’s unclear when exactly he’ll be out.

David Price will be taking the ball for the Red Sox on Sunday and he will be hoping that his second half of the season goes a lot better than his first. Price did, however, enter the All-Star break on a positive note, allowing no earned runs in eight innings of work against the Rays in his most recent outing. Price struck out 10 batters in that game and walked just one and it was actually the third consecutive time that he did exactly that. He’ll just need to do a better job of keeping balls out of play, as he allowed eight or more hits in four straight games before allowing just four against the Rays in his most recent start. Price will also need to figure out a way to keep this Yankees team in line, as he has allowed six earned runs in each of his past two starts against New York. The guys to keep an eye on in this Red Sox lineup on Sunday are DH David Ortiz (.332, 22 HR, 72 RBI), SS Xander Bogaerts (.329, 10 HR, 56 RBI) and 2B Dustin Pedroia (.304, 8 HR, 37 RBI). These three guys are all explosive hitters and have had success against Tanaka in the past. They are a combined 16-for-56 with two homers and six RBI against the righty and will be hoping to do some major damage on Sunday as well.

The Yankees will be hoping to deal the Red Sox a loss on Sunday and Masahiro Tanaka will be the guy tasked with shutting down this potent Boston lineup. Tanaka faced the Red Sox on Apr. 29 and allowed just two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. He struck out five batters in that game and walked none. While New York ended up losing that game, it’s likely that the team would come away with a better outcome if he were to pitch like that once again on Sunday. Offensively, 3B Chase Headley (.255, 7 HR, 27 RBI) and C Brian McCann (.248, 14 HR, 38 RBI) are two guys that could provide some runs for the Yankees. The two of them are a combined 20-for-53 with three homers and 10 RBI against Price in their careers. It’d be huge for New York if they can come through on Sunday.
