SAN DIEGO PADRES (19-27)

at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (28-19)

First pitch: Tuesday, 10:15 p.m. ET
Line: San Diego +180, San Francisco -110, Total: 7.0

The Giants will be looking to win their fourth straight game and 12th in their past 13 when they host the Padres on Tuesday.

San Diego has been playing extremely poorly recently, losing seven of its past 10 and scoring three or less runs in six of its past 10 as well. San Francisco, meanwhile, has been as hot as could be and is coming off of a walk off victory over this Padres team on Monday night. The Giants are now 4-0 against the Padres in San Francisco this season and 17-6 over the past three seasons. They’re also 7-0 versus San Diego overall on the year. One thing that does trend in the Padres’ favor is that they are 11-5 against the money line after three consecutive games versus a division rival this season. The Giants, meanwhile, are 37-15 against the money line in May games over the past two seasons. The starters in this matchup are set to be RHP Andrew Cashner (2-3, 4.93 ERA, 28 K) for the Padres and RHP Jeff Samardzija (6-2, 2.66 ERA, 55 K) for the Giants.

The Padres are not playing well at the moment and they’ll be hoping that Andrew Cashner can help to end their struggles. The Padres’ starter has been solid lately, allowing just six earned runs over his past 11.0 innings on the mound. He will, however, need to start working a bit deeper into games. He’ll also need to find a way to figure out the Giants, as he allowed six hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings of work the last time he faced them (Apr. 27). If Cashner can throw a quality start then the Padres will be in solid shape in this one. One guy that is really going to be looking forward to this matchup is OF Jon Jay (.269 BA, 1 HR, 14 RBI). Jay has really hit well against Samardzija in his career, going 10-for-14 with two RBI in the matchup. Since he’ll likely be hitting in the leadoff spot, it’ll be huge if he can get on base a few times in this one. It’ll be up to the rest of the Padres’ hitters to drive in some runs, though.

The Giants are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now and they’ll be looking to keep up their excellent play with Jeff Samardzija on the bump on Tuesday. He has been in the zone for San Francisco recently, allowing just five earned runs in his last 31.2 innings of work. His last start also happened to be against this Padres team on May 19 and he allowed only one earned run in eight innings of work. If he can replicate that performance then it’s likely that the Giants will keep their winning streak alive. A few of San Francisco’s bats should be able to get it going in this one as well. C Buster Posey (.263 BA, 5 HR, 17 RBI) is one guy that has really given Cashner trouble in the past. He is 11-for-25 with two homers and five RBI against the San Diego pitcher in his career. OF Brandon Crawford (.248 BA, 6 HR, 22 RBI) is another guy that will be looking forward to this matchup, as Crawford is 6-for-15 with a homer and five RBI against Cashner.
