CHICAGO WHITE SOX (2-0)

at OAKLAND ATHLETICS (0-2)

First pitch: Wednesday, 10:00 p.m. ET
Line: Chicago +120, Oakland -130, Total: 7 1/2

Carlos Rodon and the White Sox look to extend their perfect start against Sonny Gray and the A’s in their opening series of 2016.

The White Sox (2-0) have begun their season with two victories over the Athletics (0-2) in Oakland Coliseum. They’ll go for their third straight win in the four-game set behind LHP Carlos Rodon (9-6, 3.75 ERA, 139 Ks in 23 GS in 2015), who impressed in his rookie campaign. Starting for the winless A’s will be staff ace Sonny Gray (14-7, 2.73 ERA, 169 Ks, 3 CG in 2015), who didn’t pitch on Opening Day because he was dealing with the flu. The White Sox beat the A’s, 4-3, in the season opener on Monday. RF Adam Eaton (.625, 1 RBI, 1 3B), hitting in the leadoff spot, went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI triple and a run scored. RP David Robertson (0.00 ERA, 2 S, 2 Ks) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save. Manager Robin Ventura’s club won a second straight one-run game, 5-4, over the A’s on Tuesday. In his second game with the White Sox, 3B Todd Frazier (.222, 1 HR, 3 RBIs) hit a three-run blast and SS Jimmy Rollins (.222, 1 HR, 2 RBIs)—also in his first season in the Windy City—hit a go-ahead solo shot with the game tied in the ninth inning. Robertson picked up his second save in as many days.

Leadoff hitter Eaton is off to a blazing-hot start with five hits in his first eight at-bats, and the meat of the order consists of Frazier, 1B Jose Abreu (.375, 0 HRs, 0 RBIs) and LF Melky Cabrera (.000, 1 BB), who has begun the season 0-for-7. Offseason acquisition Austin Jackson (.286, 0 HRs, 1 RBI) is 2-for-7 with a run and a walk in his first two games with Chicago. Abreu is 2-for-6 lifetime against Gray with a homer, four RBIs and three strikeouts. Cabrera is 2-for-4 with a double against the All-Star and Jackson has the most experience vs. the 26-year-old righty (4-for-14 with two RBIs and four Ks). Rodon got a no-decision in his lone start against Bob Melvin’s A’s last season, surrendering five earned runs on five hits and six walks in just four innings pitched.

The Athletics don’t have a lot of names in their lineup that will scare you. RF Josh Reddick (.222, 0 HRs, 0 RBIs) hit .272 with 20 home runs in 2015, and 3B Danny Valencia (.125, 0 HR, 1 RBI) has hit cleanup in the first two games. DH Billy Butler (.286, 2 2Bs, 0 HRs, 0 RBIs) is off to a productive start, as is 3B Jed Lowrie (.375, 0 HRs, 4 RBIs, 1 R, 1 BB). 25-year-old SS Marcus Semien (.400) has two hits in five at-bats with a run scored and a walk. The A’s haven’t seen much of Rodon, who only has 23 career starts and 26 career appearances. No Athletic has more then three at-bats against the 23-year-old out of North Carolina State University. CF Billy Burns (.250, 0 HRs, 0 RBIs), C Josh Phegley (2-for-2 with two runs and a double in 2016), Reddick and Semien each have one hit off him. Gray faced the White Sox once last season and struggled mightily, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits and four walks in just three innings pitched. Lefties hit just .208 off Gray in 2015.
