Torrey Pines will be hosting some of the top golfers in the world when the TOUR heads to San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday.

Last week was an eventful one in the golf world as Jason Dufner came away with a win at the CareerBuilder Challenge and Rickie Fowler emerged victorious at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. Dufner will not be playing in this week’s event, but Rickie Fowler will be. This field also includes some big names like Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose and Patrick Reed. Day happens to be the defending champion here, shooting a nine-under in a playoff victory in 2015. The best score ever recorded at this event was a 22-under shot by Tiger Woods in 1999 and George Burns in -22. Woods is the master of this 7,698-yard course, but the seven-time Farmers Insurance Open champion is out indefinitely as he recovers from back surgery. With him out, Mickelson has the most championships amongst this field with three (2001, 2000, 1993). Joining Day in the quest for a second championship at this event will be Scott Stallings, Brandt Snedeker, Nick Watney and Ben Crane. Let’s now take a look at some of the golfers that could be holding up a trophy come Sunday:

Patrick Reed (18-to-1) - Patrick Reed has not yet won a tournament this season, but he has two second place finishes in the past three events and is 54-under over the past three tournaments. Reed is as talented as any golfer in this event, but he must prove that he can put it all together for a full 72 holes. One thing Reed doesn’t have going for him is experience in this one. Reed’s last appearance in the Farmers Insurance Open was in 2012, but that should not be an issue for somebody as good as him. At 18-to-1, it’s extremely tough not backing somebody who has been near the top of the leaderboard as often as Reed.

Phil Mickelson (22-to-1) - While Reed has little experience at this event, Phil Mickelson has plenty. Mickelson first won this tournament back in 1993 and is still one of the favorites to win in 2016. The CareerBuilder Challenge was Mickelson’s first event of the season and he really played some excellent golf in that one. Mickelson was 21-under and finished tied for third place at that event. He is going to be extremely confident heading into this one and with Woods out, Mickelson will love the fact that he is the leader in wins at this event amongst the field. He is worth a few units at 22-to-1, as he is a three-time champion at this course and was the runner-up at this event as recently as 2011.

Hideki Matsuyama (25-to-1) - It has been a quiet start to the season for Matsuyama, as the golfer has not played in a tournament since Dec. 3. Matsuyama played in the World Challenge and finished t-17th at four-under. This is one of the best young golfers on the TOUR and he was truly outstanding in 2015. Matsuyama had nine top 10 finishes in 2015 and made 24 of 26 cuts on the year. He is a near-lock to be playing still on Saturday and with his talent, he is worth placing a unit or so on at 25-to-1. He put himself on the map last season, but this is the year he wants to break out and earn a few wins.

Scott Stallings (80-to-1) - Stallings won the Farmers Insurance Open with a score of nine-under back in 2014 and followed it up by being a runner-up in 2015’s event. That success in this tournament is no fluke and Stallings clearly has some level of comfort at Torrey Pines. He is an excellent choice to be near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday and is receiving some absurd odds at 80-to-1. If you’re looking for somebody that could provide a tremendous payout and really does have a shot to win then look no further than Stallings.
