The PGA Championship Prop Bets

Tees Off: Thursday, August 13th
Whistling Straits – Kohler, WI

Top American: Brooks Koepka (+1600)
There are a lot of options here, but Koepka is on the precipice of greatness and should be amongst the names like Spieth, Watson, Fowler and Johnson soon. He has crushed the ball all summer and has posted an 18th or better in six of his last seven tournaments dating back to the AT&T Byron Nelson at the end of May. Koepka showed he can close out a tourney with a win at the Waste Management Open and is coming off a tie for sixth at the Bridgestone Invitational; getting under par in each round while putting 1.282 strokes better than the field. If he can continue with that clutch putting and add in his 309.5 yard average drive (6th on TOUR), he will be a force to reckon with at Whistling Straits. The 25-year-old will consistently put up red numbers as he ranks ninth in par breakers (23.59%) and will once again have a big performance at the last major of the year.

Will there be a playoff: Yes (+300)
The top-end talent that is going each week on the PGA TOUR is unbelievable, and while Spieth and McIlroy are the obvious favorites with both their past success in majors combined with the length and finesse to compete on a course such as this one, there are a ton of other golfers that are vying to take over and make a name for themselves. This was evident recently at the Open Championship when three players (Zach Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Marc Leishman) battled it out over three holes at St. Andrews as another two superstars (Jordan Spieth, Jason Day) were just a stroke behind. The last two visits to this venue at a PGA Championship have resulted in playoffs with Martin Kaymer winning in 2010 over Bubba Watson and Vijay Singh taking the trophy in 2004 with Justin Leonard and Chris DiMarco failing to get it done in extra holes. In 2010, it wasn’t as if Kaymer and Watson were far ahead of the field either, with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Zach Johnson all sitting there within two strokes of the lead. The impressive talent will once again pile up at the top of the leaderboard and lead to a fantastic finish.

Top European: Henrik Stenson (+700)
There is a lot of great players at the top of this group with McIlroy winning four career majors and ranking No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Justin Rose owning a U.S. Open victory, Sergio Garcia having four career runner-ups at majors, including twice at the PGA, Martin Kaymer and his two career majors and Shane Lowry who is fresh off of a victory at the Bridgestone Invitational. After that there are plenty of sleepers who could do something on this links style course that has European inspirations, but it looks as if the golfers at the top of this list will dominate. Sandwiched as the third-best odds is Henrik Stenson who is one of the best golfers in the game that has not locked down a major, and he has been close, finishing as the runner-up at the 2013 Open Championship and has consecutive thirds at this event. He leads the TOUR in GIR (73.47%) while gaining 2.093 strokes total on the field (3rd on TOUR) and has both the distance (297.4 yards per, 38th on TOUR) and accuracy off the tee (69.86%, 10th on TOUR) to top the TOUR in total driving (48). Look for one of the purest golfers, who comes in with 23 consecutive cuts made, to keep his consistency going and breakout for a top finish here.

Winning Nationality?: American (-120)
There is just too much in this group to ignore as the top five Americans in terms of odds go Spieth, Watson, Dustin Johnson, Fowler and Koepka. The next group includes two of the most consistent golfers in the past decade (Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar), then three players (Zach Johnson, Mickelson, Woods) who have combined to win 21 majors. Four of the last seven major championships have been won by one of these players and when this event was last played here, five of those names were in the top-10. There is obviously a ton of talent outside of the United States, but the Americans will run their majors streak to four when Sunday comes and goes at Whistling Straits.

First Round Leader: Bubba Watson (+2500)
Watson is tearing it up since the summer hit and despite failing to make the cut at St. Andrews, has tallied a victory (Travelers Championship) and comes into this week with a runner-up at both the RBC Canadian Open and Bridgestone Invitational. He has shot 70 or better in each of his last eight rounds and is a clear favorite to perform this week with his 315.8 yard average drive (2nd on TOUR) while owning the most total strokes gained (2.275). His round one scoring average of 69.00 ranks as the best on TOUR and he will come out firing after failing to win in each of the past two weeks and was the runner-up at this event when it was last played at this course. There is a chance he goes wire-to-wire if he can get out of the gate as expected, and is a definite threat to cash the biggest check this week.
