ATLANTA BRAVES (22-22)

at LOS ANGELES DODGERS (27-17)

First pitch: Tuesday, 10:10 p.m. ET
Line: Atlanta +225, Los Angeles -245, Total: 6.0

The Dodgers look to secure a series win over the Braves when the teams clash in Los Angeles Tuesday.

The Braves were up 2-1 heading into the seventh inning last game and the Dodgers would outscore them 5-1 from there. Los Angeles was lifted by homers from RF Andre Ethier (.313, 6 HR, 17 RBI), LF Alex Guerrero (.309, 8 HR, 20 RBI) and SS Jimmy Rollins (.201, 5 HR, 14 RBI) in the eighth inning and the team has now won three of its past four games. The Braves also enter this game playing well, winning four of their past six contests. Over the past three seasons, the Dodgers are 8-2 against Atlanta when playing at Dodger Stadium. On the mound for the Braves is RHP Julio Teheran (4-1, 3.91 ERA, 47 K) and Atlanta has ended up winning in six of his nine starts this season. For the Dodgers, LHP Clayton Kershaw (2-3, 4.32 ERA, 73 K) will be looking to turn things around. He has given up three or more earned runs in four straight starts and has not looked like the same guy that won the Cy Young Award a year ago. Teheran is 27-13 in the first half of the season over the past two years. The Dodgers, however, are 19-1 as a favorite of -200 or more in that time. The Braves are going to be without LF Kelly Johnson (Oblique) in this game. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are dealing with a few significant injuries heading into this game as well, as LF Carl Crawford (Oblique) and RF Yasiel Puig (Hamstring) are both out for the team.

Teheran will be taking the mound in this game after his best performance of the season, pitching seven innings against Milwaukee and allowing just one earned run. The Braves’ ace struck out eight batters and walked only one in what was a dominant performance. The last time Teheran faced off against Kershaw, he went eight innings and allowed just two earned runs. He struck out nine batters and walked three, but the Braves lost that game 2-1. He’ll need more run support this time around, as Atlanta can’t afford to be wasting any more gems. The only guy on this roster that has had much success against Kershaw is 1B Freddie Freeman (.302, 5 HR, 23 RBI), who is 2-for-6 with a homer and an RBI in his career against the Dodgers’ ace. He went 2-for-4 on Monday and has six hits over the past six games. LF Jonny Gomes (.221, 3 HR, 9 RBI) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs on Monday and is now on a four-game hitting streak. He’ll need to do some damage if the Braves are going to get it going offensively on Tuesday. SS Andrelton Simmons (.249, 3 HR, 18 RBI) will also need to find his way onto the bases and does enter this game with hits in his past three contests. RF Nick Markakis (.301, 0 HR, 12 RBI) was hitless on Monday, but had been on a tear heading into that game. He’ll continue to look for his first homer of the season when he faces Kershaw on Tuesday.

Kershaw is off to an uncharacteristically poor start and will look to get himself going against the Braves on Tuesday. In his only start against the Braves over the past three seasons, Kershaw went the distance and struck out nine batters while allowing just one earned run in that victory for Los Angeles. He’ll need to channel some of that magic in order to end his struggles immediately. Run support will be crucial and the Dodgers should feel good as some of their players have enjoyed a lot of success against Teheran in the past. SS Jimmy Rollins is 7-for-22 with 1 HR and 4 RBI against the Braves’ ace. 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.344, 9 HR, 33 RBI) is 3-for-7 with 2 RBI against Teheran in his career and has been as hot as could be to start the season for the Dodgers. RF Andre Ethier (.313, 6 HR, 17 RBI) has five hits over the past four games and continues to prove that he is the full-time player that he knew he could be last season. He must continue to get on base and play solid defensively. 2B Howie Kendrick (.293, 4 HR, 17 RBI) needs to start hitting the ball, as he is now 2-for-15 over the past four contests. If he does not start getting on base then he will really hurt his team moving forward. RP Kenley Jansen (0.00 ERA, 9 K, 4 SV) picked up his fourth save of the season on Monday. He has pitched five innings of scoreless baseball and looks as healthy as ever. He is solidifying this bullpen and the entire unit is making life on the Dodgers’ starters easier.
