MIAMI HEAT (16-21)

at LOS ANGELES LAKERS (12-26)

Tip-off: Tuesday, 10:35 p.m. ET
Line: Even, Total: 197.5

The Heat look to pick up a second straight victory at Staples Center on Tuesday night when they visit the Lakers.

Miami took care of the hard part of the L.A. sweep on Sunday when it rolled over the 10-point favorite Clippers by a score of 104-90, which was the Heat's first road win since Dec. 16. They have now won-and-covered in two of their past three games thanks to a defense holding these opponents to 91.0 PPG on 42% FG, and their past four games have all finished Under the total. The Lakers hosted the Blazers on Sunday and lost 106-94 as 5.5-point home underdogs, making them 1-3 SU in the past four games, but they have covered in five of their past seven contests. The Heat have dominated this head-to-head series in recent years with an 8-2 SU mark (7-3 ATS) in the past 10 meetings, including four straight SU wins. Miami has also won three of its past four road meetings in this series, going 2-2 ATS. Since 1996, the Heat are 10-2 ATS coming off a double-digit win as a road underdog of 6+ points, and are also 18-11 ATS after three straight games forcing an opponent to commit 14 or less turnovers in the past three seasons. However, the Lakers are 5-1 ATS on Tuesday nights this season and 5-1 ATS after playing two consecutive home games this season as well. It appears that SG Kobe Bryant (rest) will play for L.A. on Tuesday night, meaning there are no significant injuries for either team.

The Heat picked up a big road victory over the Clippers on Sunday and now have a very winnable game against the Lakers on Tuesday. SG Dwyane Wade (22.8 PPG, 5.6 APG) was excellent against the Clippers in the win, finishing with 17 points, 10 assists and four rebounds. He should be in for a huge game Tuesday, just like last season when he scored 23 points (11-of-17 FG) with seven assists, six rebounds and three steals in his lone meeting with Los Angeles. PF Chris Bosh (21.6 PPG, 7.8 RPG) also had a big game against the Clippers on Sunday, finishing with 34 points and seven rebounds in 39 minutes of action. Bosh should be able to dominate a Lakers team that really struggles to defend big men. He has the ability to take his defender both inside and out, and he is now benefiting from teams not being able to key on him in the paint. The reason for that has been the emergence of 7-foot C Hassan Whiteside (6.6 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.8 BPG). Whiteside was a D-League call-up for the Heat this season and he is coming off a game in which he had 23 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks in 29 minutes against the Clippers. Over the past five games, Whiteside has thrived with 12.8 PPG, 9.4 RPG and 3.2 BPG in just 23.0 MPG. His presence inside is making the Heat a much better team, and it will be interesting to see whether or not he can keep this play up.

The Lakers are coming off of a loss to the Blazers, and SG Kobe Bryant (23.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 5.3 APG) has played just once in the past four games. Bryant looked awful offensively in the one game he played, finishing a game against the Clippers with more turnovers (six) than points (four, on 2-of-12 FG), but he did add eight rebounds and seven assists in those 28 minutes. If Bryant is not healthy and rested, then he is no help to the Lakers, so it’s important that he is feeling good enough to play Tuesday, and doesn’t just force it. With Bryant out, C Jordan Hill (12.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.0 BPG) has been this team’s most reliable player. Hill had 14 points and five rebounds on Sunday and he’ll need to hold his own in a matchup with Chris Bosh on Tuesday. SF Wesley Johnson (9.6 PPG, 3.7 RPG) was big in the game against Portland, scoring 17 points in 31 minutes. Johnson is an excellent perimeter defender, and he is a dangerous player for Los Angeles when he is hitting from the outside. PF Carlos Boozer (12.9 PPG, 7.2 RPG) has also played well for the Lakers lately, averaging 11.0 PPG and 7.0 RPG over the past five games, and he is probably the Lakers’ second-best scorer after Bryant. One guy who will need to show up in this one is PG Jeremy Lin (10.8 PPG, 4.5 APG). Lin had 18 points and six assists in a win over the Magic last Friday, but he followed it up with just nine points in 19 minutes against the Blazers. Lin will need to find some sort of consistency moving forward, and he is a guy that must play better when Bryant is limited.
