UFC Fight Night: Jury vs. Gomi

Saturday, Sept. 20 – 4:30 a.m. ET
Saitama, Japan

Myles Jury (14-0) vs. Takanori Gomi (35-9)

Lightweight bout
Line: Jury -500, Gomi +375

Myles Jury looks to remain undefeated as he takes on Takanori Gomi at UFC Fight Night in Japan on Saturday.

Jury, a 25-year-old from Michigan, has shown early in his career that he has the chance to be a major force in the lightweight class in the future. Fury is coming off a victory against Diego Sanchez. In that fight, he was in complete control as he went on to get a unanimous decision. Fury is a terrific athlete that has the ability to win a fight in many different ways. His speed and quickness on his punches is elite, and he has shown that he can take a punch as well. His opponent, Takanori Gomi, is also coming off a victory. The 35-year-old from Japan defeated Isaac Vallie-Flagg by way of unanimous decision. Being able to fight in his hometown country will be a big advantage for Gomi, but in the end, JURY is ready to take the next step. This should be an entertaining fight, but Jury will continue his march up the lightweight ladder.

Jury has 14 victories in his career, with seven of them coming by way of knockout. However, he is not just a knockout artist, as he can also win a match by submission (four victories) and decision (three wins). His biggest advantage in Saturday's fight will be his ability to take the match to the ground. His takedown average of 3.27 is more than two times that of Gomi. Jury is also slightly more accurate, completing 70 percent of his takedowns, compared to 66 percent by Gomi. Jury will need to use his speed and quickness to his advantage, but if he is able to set the tone, Gomi will be in big trouble. However, if Jury struggles early and lets what figures to be a huge home advantage for Gomi to get behind him, then we could be in for a tremendous fight.

Gomi enters this match with 35 career victories, with 16 of them coming by way of decision. He also has 13 wins by knockout and six wins by submission. He will have a huge advantage when it comes to striking, landing 3.93 significant strikes per minute, compared to 2.56 for Jury. Not only does Gomi throw a lot of punches, but those 13 knockout victories shows he has the ability to end a fight with his fists. The crowd is going to absolutely be in his corner, so he will need to get off to a fast start if he is going to get the win. He can’t allow Jury to take him to the mat, because if he does, Gomi may not be able to get up.
