The entire golf season has come down to this, the TOUR Championship, as the top-30 players in the FedEx Cup standings meet to determine who will take home the trophy and likely become the FedEx Cup champion as the winner earns 2,500 points. The top-five players in points are guaranteed an overall victory if they can win at the par-70, 7,154-yard course this weekend and the standings currently have Chris Kirk leading the way followed by Billy Horschel (last week’s winner), Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy and Hunter Mahan. Last year, Henrik Stenson owned this course with a score of 13-under, which bested runner-ups Jordan Spieth and Steve Stricker by three strokes, and was the top score at East Lake Golf Club since Tiger Woods put up an unbelievable tournament record of 23-under in 2007. The field will be cut down by one this week, as Dustin Johnson is on a hiatus for personal reasons. Below are some of the players that have a chance to take the lion’s share of an $8 million purse this week. Golfers to WatchRory McIlroy (3/1): McIlroy is the best golfer in the world and he has been spot-on in 2014 with three victories (2 majors) and 11 top-10 finishes in 16 starts on the PGA Tour. He was once again in contention at the BMW championship last week, but a 72 on Saturday derailed his plans, as he ended up finishing in eight place (-8). He did not get to this point by luck, as McIlroy ranks second on the tour in driving distance (311.2) while also hitting greens in regulation 69.4% of the time (6th on tour). The payout for McIlroy is never great, but his dominance should warrant him a play this week on the biggest stage. Rickie Fowler (23/2): Fowler has been putting up some great results as the season comes to a close with top-9 finishes in six of his past seven events. He always seems to perform well in the spotlight, placing amongst the top-5 in all four majors this year, but has not been able to grab a victory. Fowler is not spectacular in any one area, but takes advantage when needed while converting 32.2% of his birdie or better chances (15th on tour) and averaging 297 yards off the tee (37th on tour). Amazingly, the 25-year-old has just two PGA wins under his belt, but is on the cusp of greatness and should be on everyone’s radar. Jim Furyk (9/1): Furyk is by far one of the most consistent players on tour, as he has made the cut in all 20 of his events while being the runner-up three times this year. So far in these playoffs, the 44-year-old has gotten 8th or better twice, and finished 4th last week while improving each day, capped off by a 66 on Sunday. He has owned East Lake with top-10 finishes in four of his past five events there; including a victory back in 2010. Furyk is the tour's fourth-most accurate player off the tee (73%), and this has given him a chance to hit plenty of greens in regulation, which he has done 68.6% of the time (15th on tour). His odds aren't great, but he still represents adequate betting value for this tournament. Billy Horschel (16/1): It is hard to ignore what Horschel has done over the past two weeks with eight straight rounds of 69 or better, which included a tournament-changing 63 on Saturday of the BMW Championship. He finished 7th in this event last year and has been amazing at hitting greens in regulation this season (70%, 4th on tour) while currently ranking second in the FedEx Cup standings. It may seem improbable that he will be able to keep up this hot streak, but you might as well ride Horschel and hope it continues. Ryan Palmer (35/1): Palmer has improved over the past three weeks and posted a 9-under score last week, good enough for fourth place. He has not won since 2010, but does have seven top-10's this season and ranks in the top-35 in both driving distance (300.1) and greens in regulation (67.2%) while making a birdie or better on par-4’s 19.3% of the time (2nd on tour). Despite his darkhorse odds, Palmer is playing well enough to compete against the best golfers in the world this week and could be dotting the top of the leaderboard throughout.
