The FedEx Cup playoffs have been great so far with Hunter Mahan (-14) taking a victory at The Barclays followed by a tremendous showing by Chris Kirk (-15) at the Deutsche Bank Championship this past weekend. Now the PGA Tour heads to Colorado for the BMW Championship which is open to the top-70 players in the FedEx Cup standings. A couple of interesting names were on the outside looking in on the top-70 going into last week, but six golfers, including Geoff Ogilvy, Billy Horschel and Chesson Hadley, put forth solid performances and earned a spot in this weekend’s event. Zach Johnson went 16-under par last season to earn the trophy here, and in the seven years that this tourney has been around the names that have won (McIlroy, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods) are very impressive. Also, there has never been a playoff at the BMW Championship with the closest score coming in 2010 when Dustin Johnson defeated Paul Casey by just one stroke. Let’s take a look at a few players who have a chance at dominating this par-72, 7,348 yards course. Golfers to WatchRory McIlroy (4/1): McIlroy had come somewhat back down to earth when he placed 22nd at The Barclays, but he turned things back around when he finished fifth last week. He is always a threat to put up big numbers, as he has three wins against tough fields this year and has placed in the top-25 in all 15 of his PGA events. McIlroy has an extraordinary combination of driving distance (310.4, 3rd on tour) and greens in regulation (69.5%, 6th on tour) and this should bode well once again at a course that many players are taking on for the first time. Jason Day (29/2): Day has been great in the playoffs so far as the runner-up in The Barclays and a 7th-place finish at the Deutsche Back Championship. He had the lead or share of the lead much of this past weekend, but just could not pull it out on Monday. Overall on the year, Day has five top-10’s in 13 tournaments due to his length off the tee (300.1, 23rd on tour) and ability to scramble (63.9%, 8th on tour). Look for Day to once again be near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday. Jimmy Walker (30/1): Walker is the surprise this season with three early victories to start the year, but he did not stop there, and has put up top-10 finishes in five of his past 10 tourneys. On his resume in 2014, he has two single-digit finishes at majors and competed last week when his 9-under score put him in ninth. Walker's all-around game is tremendous as he ranks 7th in strokes-gained putting (.555), 18th in driving distance (301.1) and 30th in greens in regulation (67.6%). Walker may have surprised many to start the year, but this 35-year-old should be on everybody’s radar now. Bill Haas (35/1): Haas has been one of the more consistent players on tour this season while making the cut in 25-of-26 tournaments played which has included 15 top-25 finishes. He has not finished outside of the top-15 in any of his past three events and has shot 12 straight rounds of 70 or better in that time. Haas gives himself plenty of chances at making low scores with a green in regulation percentage of 68.8% (11th on tour). Haas has at least one win each year since 2010, so his consistency should play well as the season winds down. Kevin Na (100/1): Na has been an all-or-nothing type player with six top-10’s and seven cuts in 25 starts on the year. He makes up for his short game off the tee (280.3, 152nd on tour) with great putting (.383 strokes gained putting, 22nd on tour) and the second-best scrambling amongst PGA players (66.3%), which has led to a scoring average of 70.0 (8th on tour). Na could be a great longshot pick, given that when he is on, he can tear up any course.
