How much is home court advantage worth in college basketball? There is no exact recipe for determining this. Some experts or services choose to apply a home & road team power rating to a line, others simply award a standard 3 or 4 points edge to the hosts. Is either right? Well, it can be argued that neither is. Naturally, if a team is good, it will likely play good on the road, so a standard power rating should work in evaluating their strength. On the other hand, using a standard 3 to 4 point edge can’t be right either, as obviously playing at a team like The Citadel is much different from having to travel to Spokane to take on Gonzaga.
With that in mind, StatFox staff members have for years employed a strategy for dealing with home court advantage in college hoops by simply taking a look at a team’s 3-year won-lost record at home. Here is a look at some of the top college basketball programs in terms of home record, along with their theoretical home court edge rating. This rating can be used when comparing team Power Ratings, or Outplay Factor Ratings to come up with a theoretical line.
